Client: Media Hackers
Agency: Leah Chew Creative

As 2020 kind of shattered the traditional newsroom facade, Media Hackers is focused on how we can use tech tools to create better media businesses by understanding independent content creators and their viability — those who are hacking together a living going solo. Through taking a look at the tools journalists, creators, and solopreneurs are using to succeed, Media Hackers is gaining a better understanding of where this industry is going in the future and is helping to educate others navigating this new media world.

Creating this brand identity for Media Hackers their founder and kindred, eclectic soul, Erin Staples, we knew this brand had to push the boundaries of news media by adding some funkiness, grit, and some stick-it-to-the-man energy. Developing the brand pillars of education, entrepreneurship, engagement, and edginess, we found a balance to pay homage to the old media ways while maintaining a little rebellious streak.

We may be saying ‘goodbye’ to old-school media, crisp newspapers in hand, and the smell of the ink as you peruse the first page. But some publication trends are here to stay. Media Hackers’ brand was inspired by newspapers with Extra! Extra! bold headlines, imperfect newsprint production, halftone patterns, and editorial illustrations. And then we shook it up with flowy gradients representing out-of-the-box thinking and authentic content creation and rough, bold lines symbolizing the (sometimes messy) problem-solving process and the grit that it takes to be ever-changing in these industries. I am not only proud of this brand identity but the badass boss lady who is leading the charge to bring us all into the future of media.

“Leah is an amazing individual who listens to what you need, but uses her expertise and guidance to move your brand in the direction it would need.”

— Erin Mikail Staples, Media Hackers
